A perfect half-way-house between the versatility of a conservatory and the original structure and style of your home.
As the name might suggest, the origins of the orangery lie in the pursuit of growing sweet oranges, becoming popular with 17th century Dutch gentry before being introduced to wealthy English estates soon after. Often considered the conservatory for people who don’t like conservatories, orangeries typically feature less glazing than their more-prevalent counterparts, both in their walls and roofing. As a result they are normally cooler than a conservatory during the summer months and have better natural heat retention throughout the winter.
Orangeries have grown in popularity as, in comparison to conservatories, some argue their substantial frames appear more ‘original’ to a property than a retrofit conservatory. What both have in common, however, is the wide variety of uses you can put them to.
Would you like a second living or dining room with a more al-fresco feel? Perhaps you need a room flooded with natural light for artistic pursuits, like painting, drawing or photography. Or maybe, like the orangery’s Dutch pioneers, you yearn to cultivate citrus fruits and other plants that flourish in more temperate climates.
Double Glazing Direct can help and advise you on the numerous possibilities to make these dreams become reality.
