As the name might suggest, the origins of the orangery lie in the pursuit of growing sweet oranges, becoming popular with 17th century Dutch gentry before being introduced to wealthy English estates soon after. Often considered the conservatory for people who don’t like conservatories, orangeries typically feature less glazing than their more-prevalent counterparts, both in their walls and roofing. As a result they are normally cooler than a conservatory during the summer months and have better natural heat retention throughout the winter.
